Eyepatches are awesome.

FG 42 (German: Fallschirmjägergewehr 42, English: Paratrooper Rifle 42) is a teacher of the Battle Rifle School at Seishou Academy in the Upotte!! anime and manga series.

In Fiction[]

Appearance[]

Manga FG 42

FG 42 is most often seen wearing a World War II era German styled military uniform, which is reminscent of the uniforms worn by German Paratroopers. FG 42 has heterochromia, where her left is blue and her right eye is yellow, however this is concealed by the eyepatch she wears over her right eye. FG 42 has pale blonde hair, which she usually wears up while in uniform.

When out of uniform FG 42 lets her hair down and removes her eyepatch which can cause some confusion due to the difference in appearance; Genkoku didn't recognize her at first.

Personality[]

FG 42 is known to act in a serious, strict, and disciplined manner, which is stereotypical of German soldiers. Due to this FG 42 is hard on her students and is known as "the strict teacher", however she is shown to have confidence in her students, and geniunly cares for their well-being. She is occasionally (for comedical purposes) shown to be something of an airhead at times; being a wartime-born rifle requested especially by a military unit, FG 42 tends to thinks in a practical military context.

In Real Life[]

History[]

The Fallschirmjägergewehr 42 was a select fire battle rifle produced in Nazi Germany during World War II. The rifle was specifically developed to be used by the elite German Fallschirmjäger, after it became apparent that standard weapons were not ideal for airborne operations. The resulting FG 42 was designed to combine the firepower of a lightmachinegun with in a lightweight rifle, which was no larger than the standard-issue Kar 98K rifle.

In 1941, the Luftwaffe requested a hand-held select fire weapon for their paratroopers. The Reich Air Ministry (RLM) wanted to develop a should-fired automatic rifle that could replace bolt-action rifles, submachinguns, and light machineguns for airborne infantry on the battlefield. After trying to intiate a formal weapons development program with the Army Ordnance Department, (which was responsible for small-arms development within the Wehrmacht) the Luftwaffe began their own independent development due to conflicting priorities with the Army.

After the high casualties sustained by paratroopers during Operation Mercury Hitler decided that airborne operations were no longer tactically feasible, and all official plans for the FG 42 were terminated. However, Hermann Göring privately ordered the continuation of the project. With this the RLM went directly to German industry with their plans and issued the specifications for the rifle. Eventually Rheinmetall-Borsig's prototype design Ausführung "A" ("type A") proved satisfactory, and a series of modifications to improve on it began.

Users[]

The German Fallschirmjäger and other airborne infantry were known to use the FG 42, as such Nazi Germany is the only know user of the FG 42. However, several nations developed their own derivitives of the FG 42 after the end of the war.

Performance[]

The FG 42 was a select-fire air-cooled automatic rifle. It was also one of the first rifles to incoporate the "straight line" recoil configuration. The FG 42 featured a side-mounted 10 to 20 round detachable box magazine, which combined with the general layout of the rifle allowed for increased controllability. However, despite this the FG 42 was difficult to control in automatic fire due to a combination of muzzle rise and heavier ammunition caused balance issues. It is important to note that the FG 42 did feature a muzzle device that lessened recoil and muzzle flash, but also increased blast and noise.

The FG 42 fired from a closed-bolt when in semi-automatic mode, and was notable for delaying the release of the firing pin until after the trigger was pressed as well as having little movement in the action, this meant increased single-shot accuracy. For automatic fire the FG 42 was designed to fire from an open-bolt, which helped prevent overheating and "cook-off". Additionally, when automatic fire was selected the bolt would remain open longer between bursts to increase cooling.

Cost[]

There are no known civilian variants of the original FG 42 produced, furthermore it is incredibly rare to come across, much less obtain a working original FG 42. However, working replica's are available for purchase for about 7500€ (around $9,500 USD) from the German company HZA Kulmbach GmBH .
